Product Description
Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

Wow, totally amazed.
This is such a ripoff its almost funny.
Attention: This is not a new concept. Its been around in America for 6 years. Ever hear of Battle Royale? If no, then I understand. This is so bad, its almost funny. Except it isn’t. Its a warped and twisted mix of 1984, Battle Royale, and The Running Man. Stay away.

I am absolutely in shock. I was recommended this book and was told it was flying off the shelves at our upper grade school book fair. The students and parents were all grabbing them and asking for book 2. So I started it and I am shocked and so completely disturbed. How could anyone on this planet enjoy reading about teenagers killing each other? My gosh, some of the kids are 12 for goodness sake!! After so many attacks at highschools by teens, doesn’t this seem disturbing and innappropriate to anyone? What kind of a sick person writes this stuff and promotes it to young adults? What is wrong with this society? What sick people find this entertaining??? If I could I would give this book and all the others a negative 10! And please parents, DO NOT let your teens read this garbage. Not when there are so many other good choices!

This book had my attention and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. However, I was very disappointed. When I closed the book for the last time I was amazed at what a bad example the main character is for young adults. She lies, she does what ever her superiors ask her to do including get naked for men and women alike, she’ll kill other teens, she’ll profess her love and kiss someone she doesn’t really love all just so she can succeed in the game. She has no morals, integrity, or values. All she wants to do is live through the games and will stop at next to nothing to do this. Where is the heroism in this? I felt the author was trying to teach young adults particularly girls that when it comes to succeeding in this life everything is fair game (using their bodies, phony romantic relationships, deceit, and popularity). These are not the kind of things I want my children doing to gain worldly success. I was disgusted with the book and hope none of my children ever read it.

Seriously?? People, Suzanne Collins is stealing ideas from different books and movies and piecing them together, creating “something completely new.” Come on. When I read this book, the only thing I could think was, “Hmm, where have I seen THIS before? OH YEAH, “Battle Royale” by Koushun Takami, “The Long Walk” by Steven King, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, the movie The Condemned, et cetera.” This is plagiarism at its worst, I mean this book has been written a thousand times, and she didn’t even try to change any circumstances.
…And now she is being recognized as inspirational, bringing a “completely new concept” of kids killing kids?? IT’S BEEN DONE! It disgusts me that no one has sued her for this second-rate version of amazing literature. Also, if she’s going to completely steal their story lines, she could at least do it well; Her writing is terrible.
Not only that, but she’s using a textbook example of a dystopian society. Like, there’s not a thing that makes this society new or different. It’s all so cliche! Can’t she think of a single new concept? I mean, putting things in the blender isn’t a skill.
Well, that pretty much ends my rant. Please, if you’re going to buy something, buy an original! Try Battle Royale, that’s a personal favorite of mine, but whatever you do, don’t buy this unoriginal cra p.
Congratulations, Suzanne! You’ve just proven that idiots without brains in their heads can be successful too!

I picked up this book because it received such acclaim in Publishers Weekly Magazine. “Booksellers’ choice to win the Newbery!” etc. Well, I wasn’t one of those readers who couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t wait to close the book and return it to the library! The time we live in right now is depressing enough with the economic situation at hand, and reading this book was sheer torture … brutal, grim, violent, and hopeless. I had to skip to the end because I couldn’t bear it anymore. I wanted to be done with the book already. What is it that everyone sees in this? The writing is adequate enough, but the story line – that a society would send kids into the arena to kill each other until one was left standing – is hardly the sort of plot I’d recommend for teens. The hype on this book was truly disappointing to me, and I wouldn’t recommend it.
