Young readers enjoy the delightfully consistent cast of characters and reliable story lines of series fiction. Because of their popularity and appeal, books in series are great vehicles for fostering literacy among all types of readers, including ABE and ESL students. In addition, readers of series fiction are almost always adamant about reading every title in the series-in series order. Yet traditional information sources on children’s and YA literature include very little about series fiction. It is rarely reviewed or catalogued, so objective information about the titles is hard to come by. And finding out the proper order of titles in series can also be a challenge. So, while series fiction is in high demand with young readers, librarians often have difficulty managing this large and growing body of literature. This guide, geared to elementary readers, will be a rich resource and time-saver for librarians who work with children. It introduces users to the best and most popular fiction series of today, covering approximately 1,200 series appropriate for elementary readers. For each series, the authors provide an annotation that describes the series’ appeal and lists characters, and location. The original publisher of the series is given, along with the range of dates over which the series was published, a grade level range, and genre. Annotations will also indicate series and titles that are accepted by some of the popular electronic reading programs (e.g., Accelerated Reading, Reading First). A numbered list of titles in the series follows. Grades K-6.
How have Shakespearean characters, words, texts and iconography been represented and reworked through popular music? Do all types of popular music represent Shakespeare in the same ways? And how do the links between Shakespeare and popular music challenge what we think we know about both Shakespeare and popular music? One of the enduring myths about how Shakespeare and popular music relate is that they don't – after all the antagonism between high culture and pop music could be considered mutual. In the first book of its kind, Adam Hansen shows what happens to Shakespeare when he exists in and becomes popular music, in all its diverse and glorious forms. Exploring these interactions reveals as much about the functions of the diverse genres of popular music as it does about Shakespeare as a global cultural form. Discussing a wide range of examples in a critically-informed but lively and accessible style, this book brings something new to Shakespeare and popular music, capturing the excitement and energy of both for its readers.
Graham Greene was one of England’s most daring, most politically and theologically controversial, and most significant writers of the middle and late twentieth century. Many of his novels were phenomenally popular and address challengingly difficult religious, social, and political issues. At least 18 of his novels and 22 of his short stories have been adapted for movies and television. This encyclopedia begins with a brief introductory essay about Greene’s body of work. A chronology summarizes the chief events of his literary career, military work, travels and personal life. Hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries follow, summarizing the plots of his novels and short stories, indicating movies and television dramas adapted from them, describing his fictional characters, and relating them to his own experiences, his family members, and real-life figures. Most entries are followed by bibliographical citations.
In this pioneering volume, Howell addresses the extent to which fictional characters are legally recognized and protected as intellectual property. Through a judicious selection of cases chosen for their bearing on the popular arts, the author reviews the basic legal principles involved–copyright, trademark, unfair competition, and contract law–and analyzes their applications to fictional characters. In addition to tracing the evolution of the law relating to the protection of fictional characters, Howell explores the feasibility of isolating characters and protecting them via stringent copyright and/or trademark laws, addresses character merchandising and the associated legal issues, and suggests legal reforms aimed at protecting the creator. Detailed case information serves both to illustrate the legal principles and actions discussed and to stand as a model for the proprietors of future characters. Divided into two major sections, the volume begins by offering a comprehensive introduction to intellectual property law. Specific topics addressed include basic concepts of property, statutory protection of intellectual property, elements of an infringement action, defenses to copyright infringement, unfair competition, and the application of trademark principles to literary properties. In the second section, Howell analyzes the extent to which the fictional character is legally regarded as intellectual property. She reviews situations in which copyright and trademark law have been invoked to protect the creator of a fictional character, examines cases involving such well-known characters as the Lone Ranger, Superman, and the crew of the Starship Enterprise, and presents an extended analysis of the case of Tarzan. Finally, Howell considers whether right of publicity and merchandising offer additional protection for fictional characters. In the concluding chapter, she offers an analysis of copyright decisions and a proposal for their reconciliation. Both practicing
Games are poised for a major evolution, driven by growth in technical sophistication and audience reach. Characters that create powerful social and emotional connections with players throughout the game-play itself (not just in cut scenes) will be essential to next-generation games. However, the principles of sophisticated character design and interaction are not widely understood within the game development community. Further complicating the situation are powerful gender and cultural issues that can influence perception of characters. Katherine Isbister has spent the last 10 years examining what makes interactions with computer characters useful and engaging to different audiences. This work has revealed that the key to good design is leveraging player psychology: understanding what’s memorable, exciting, and useful to a person about real-life social interactions, and applying those insights to character design. Game designers who create great characters often make use of these psychological principles without realizing it. Better Game Characters by Design gives game design professionals and other interactive media designers a framework for understanding how social roles and perceptions affect players’ reactions to characters, helping produce stronger designs and better results. * Includes extensive illustrations, game examples, interviews with game designers, and clips from popular games on the DVD to illustrate concepts and best practices* Uses a non-technical approach appropriate for artists and designers as well as developers* Introduces and explains key concepts from psychology and social science, including cultural and gender specific roles and perceptions, and includes design exercises to explore ideas further

Product Description
This hilarious book will have children tying their tongues in knots as they try to read aloud the most terrible tongue twisters ever written. They’ll have so much fun they won’t even realise that they’re learning to read at the same time! With his unique combination of hilarious stories, zany pictures and riotous rhymes, Dr Suess has been delighting young children and helping them learn to read for over fifty years. Creator of the wonderfully anarchic Cat in the Hat, and ranked among the UK’s top ten favourite children’s authors, Dr. Seuss is a global best-seller, with nearly half a billion books sold worldwide. As part of a major rebrand programme, HarperCollins is relaunching Dr Seuss’s best-selling books. In response to consumer demand, bright new cover designs incorporate much-needed guidance on reading levels. The standard paperbacks divide into three reading strands — Blue Back Books for parents to share with young children, Green Back Books for budding readers to tackle on their own, and Yellow Back Books for older, more fluent readers to enjoy. This is a Green Back book.Amazon.com Review
Caution: for advanced storytellers only! The tongue twisters in this book will have your children laughing for hours–and that laughter just might be directed at you! Mixing genuine words with classic Seuss vocabulary, Oh Say Can You Say gets trickier with every page. You’ll start off easy with this cautionary limerick:

Said a book-reading parrot named Hooey, “The words in this book are all phooey. When you join them your lips will make slips and back flips, and your tongue may end up in Saint Looey!”

Don’t say he didn’t warn you. For a truly inspired family gigglefest, this is the top of the charts. (Preschool to early reader) –Jill Lightner

Product Description
Some people just won’t take the hint when it’s time to go to bed, but Marvin K. Mooney eventually gets the message! This fun tale by Dr. Seuss will delight young readers and remind them that they sometimes have to do what they are told! This delightful book forms part of the second stage in HarperCollins’ major Dr. Seuss rebrand programme. With the relaunch of 10 more titles in August 2003, such all-time favourites as How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? and Dr. Seuss’ Sleep Book boast bright new covers that incorporate much needed guidance on reading levels: Blue Back Books are for parents to share with young children, Green Back Books are for budding readers to tackle on their own, and Yellow Back Books are for older, more fluent readers to enjoy. Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! belongs to the Green Back Book range.Amazon.com Review
Oh, why won’t Marvin K. Mooney just please go now? In this 1972 classic for “beginning beginners,” Dr. Seuss devotes his rhymes to budging the reluctant young Marvin K.: “The time has come. The time is now. Just go. Go. GO! I don’t care how.” But despite his impatience, our narrator certainly isn’t short of ideas on how Marvin could make an exit. “You can go on stilts. You can go by fish. You can go in a Crunk-Car if you wish.” Seuss’s ever wacky illustrations accompany each new mode of transport, from balloon to broomstick to Bumble-Boat. And if those who are just learning find a word they don’t know, chances are Seuss has simply made it up to fill out this ear-pleasing, easy-to-read text. This book is yet another fun and euphonious entry from the good doctor, a silly primer for budding rhymers and readers. (Ages 4 to 8) –Paul Hughes
